Old Door + Old Silverware = New Creation

Whew...I am plum tuckered out.  The Eglin Consignment & Thrift (the base thrift shop that I work part time at) opened our doors at our new location today and we were B.U.S.Y.!  The good news is that it means the move is officially over-no more packing and unpacking, no more 12 hour days at the thrift store, no more moving displays, and no more setting up the new store..  And the even better news is it's only one day until my vacation to see family starts.  The bad news is my house isn't fully cleaned, I'm not packed, I still have to drop some stuff off at Smith's and De'France tomorrow, and I have a really long to-do list.  But, it will all get done, I am sure of it!!

I was talking with a friend tonight over email about some silverware hooks and it reminded me of this little project I whipped up a little while back.

This was an old screen door that came from the side of the road.  The bottom portion was rotted, so I just cut if off and was left with this piece.  Such great natural worn patina!!  Couldn't recreate that beauty if I tried!  All I did to this (actually my wonderful handy-man Dad did this for me because I had a million things I was trying to get done) was add some vintage silverware to it to make hooks.  I just bent the silverware by hand and drilled a hole into the handle portion of the silverware and then screwed them right into the door.  I added a wire to the back to hang it with.  Ta-da....super simple and super cute!

It's worth noting the importance of telling people how much you love side of the road treasures trash.  This old door and the table underneath it both came from a huge trash pile on the side of the road.  A great friend (who just had adorable twins) called me up to give me a heads up about this junk and thought I might be interested...was I ever...I scored the screen door, two tables, chairs, porch columns, and much more.  As usual, I paid my finder's fee to my friend and it was a win-win for both of us!

What an amazing "side of the road" find. There is something so wonderful about the patina of old pieces. I love what you did with it too.

I am pretty new to all this blogging stuff, so if there is another way to follow you let me know. Keep on keeping on inspiring all us newbies.

This is a really great idea. I have an old door very similar to this in my garage and may have to start hunting down some old silverware. Thank you for sharing!

Good idea to cut off the unwanted part of the door. It looks very rustic and chic with silverware hooks! The table looks amazing as well! ;)

I've been browsing on-line greater than 3 hours these days, but I never found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It is lovely value sufficient for me. In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made just right content as you probably did, the web will likely be much more useful than ever before.
